What is a teenage eating disorder? There are two disorders that largely affect teens; one is anorexia nervosa and the other bulimia.
Each of these eating disorders if not addressed and corrected can be fatal and should never be taken lightly.
Teens who have anorexia nervosa exhibit some and/or all of the following symptoms and behaviors.
• Resort to starving themselves
• Use laxatives as a means of expelling food from their systems
• Spend a lot of time and energy hiding the fact that they are no longer eating in a healthy manner
• Are obsessed with their own self image and dieting
• Have tried all of the fad diets
• Exercise excessively, even when they are sick with a fever, they will still feel the drive to work out
• Deny anything is wrong, different or changed
• Is unable to see themselves as anything but fat - even if they are able to see bones under their skin - denial is strong
• Females will often stop having a menstrual period when their bodies are subjected to starvation
If a teen has the symptoms and behaviors of someone with bulimia they may still exhibit some of the behaviors of someone with anorexia nervosa and in addition may show signs of these:
• Binge eating
• Purging after eating
• Low self image and self esteem
• Believe they are fat - even if they are not
• Feel shame and remorse about their purging
• Spend a lot of time an energy denying they are engaging in the binge-purge pattern
• Will often hide food in closets to binge on
Teenage eating disorders have been known to take lives. One of the most well-known cases was the singer, Karen Carpenter, who lived and suffered with anorexia nervosa for almost ten years before she died. Sadly, she was treated for the disorder too late and her heart gave out after years of abuse and she died before she could heal.
Fortunately, today there are numerous areas to find help for teenage eating disorders, and because of awareness these disorders no longer have to be considered fatal. There are treatment facilities, self help books, books by doctors, experts and survivors can be found at most bookstores and a slew of online information can be accessed.
